A Canadian’s Viewpoint of Honduras

I went to Honduras because I wanted adventure, an opportunity to learn more about myself and the world and, most importantly, a year without winter. The bustle and cold of Toronto wasn’t for me anymore.

I’d been there before, a year prior, for a few months of volunteer teaching. Its beauty and its people captured me. I was determined to return to Latin America as as soon as I could.

The City on the Hill

Santa Rosa de Copan is located in western Honduras, hours away from the bustling sounds of San Pedro Sula and the capital city Tegucigalpa. It is tucked in between, above, and below rolling mountains. Seemingly untouched by man, these lush mountains offer a glimpse of what this entire region once looked like, and their beauty conjures up hope for its future. These mountains, their highs and their lows, define this city and those that call it home.

Ruta Lenca

People who have visited Honduras and will talk of the Bay Islands lifestyle, or the famous ruins near Copán. I agree that, in terms of tourism, they are indeed the undisputed heavyweight champions, yet there is much more to this diverse Central American nation than sun, sea, and statues.

After a month of exploration in El Salvador, we began to hanker for the relative creature comforts afforded by the Central American Gringo Trail. From the Salvadoran border town of Perquín, we planned to cross into Honduras and head directly to Copán – a distance totaling 160 miles. We would pass through Marcala, Gracias, Santa Rosa de Copán, and La Entrada en route, and arrive at the final destination the following morning – in time for a generous portion of yoghurt and granola, a breakfast option solely available in tourist hotspots.

Susan Bruno Travels to Copan

There are a few people in the world who grab hold of life and truly make a difference. Mother Teresa was one of them, and Susan Bruno might be next in line.

Amidst the stormy days of early January, Bruno, a West Shore resident who has been following the work of Mother Teresa for nearly a decade, boarded a twin engine piper airplane set for Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras. With her were Incline Village pilot Rob Lober and Dr. Ed Weiss and Dr. Judi Foy from the High Sierra Chapter of Flying Doctors, a nonprofit organization that flies more than a dozen missions a year to administer free medical and dental care.
