40 years ago, the Maya Archaeological Park at Copan Ruinas was awarded the status of World Heritage Site. This is the first and only UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site in Honduras! It is easy to see why Copan Ruinas is a World Heritage Site in Honduras. The site is truly spectacular.
Here I go again, you will ask, how can Tegucigalpa be the Central American Capital City with the most Colonial Heritage? Heck it was not even the capital of the province of Honduras during colonial times! Yet, as it turns out, today, most of the capitals of the Central American countries where not the most important city of the province during colonial times.
This massive fortress was built during colonial times to defend the Spanish commercial fleet in the Gulf of Honduras. King Ferdinand VI of Spain gave instructions to build the fortress. Construction took place between 1768 and 1775. This is without doubt the most important colonial military building in Central America and is in very good condition

There are some towns that have a unique sense of place. Yuscaran, one of my favorite towns in Honduras has a lot of sense of place! Yuscaran is a colonial town that dates to the XVIII century (Circa 1730). The name is an ancient Indian name that means big mountain. Yuscaran sits at an altitude of just over 1000 meters above sea level.
