Did you know that there was a Bay Islands flag? If you answer is no, do not worry, I did not know either! This week I was in Utila and stopped by the Buccaneer bar and grill for lunch before taking the Utila Dream ferry back to La Ceiba. There were several new items in the décor, and one stuck out. A Union Jack flag with a weird coat of arms in the middle of it.
The Buccaneer Inn is built in the perfect spot and has the perfect feel to it. It gives the community of French Harbour character and is the pride of the town. It has been reinvented and is now home to Roatan’s newest swim club. It is also home to a lovely small museum that features the history of the Bay Islands of Honduras. Enjoy at cup of coffee at the Walala Café, or your favorite beer at the Beer Bar.
To my knowledge, the oldest island house in Utila is where Munchies, the restaurant is in. This is just west of the Municipal dock. This house was once in the “Cays” and the owners brought it with them to Utila Town many years ago. The new owners renovated it a few years ago, and one of the main beams in the home had the date of 1864 written on it.
One of the greatest bars and restaurants in Utila has ceased to exist. As a matter of fact, it pretty much died when its founder, Lee Odelein passed away a few months ago. Rehab Bar came to be under the direction of Lee. He was a friendly, charismatic fellow who knew how to run a restaurant bar.
I guess I am a born explorer. Perhaps not your Indiana Jones adventurer going way off the beaten path to follow a quest. But I am one to take a turn on the road and see where it leads. Today while in Roatan, I did just that, and went down a steep road following a sign that said “Ibagari”.
Since I live in La Ceiba, travel to Roatan is easy. I have two options: I can fly or take the ferry. When I first moved to Honduras, I could only fly, as there was still no ferry service available. Fortunately, we now have a state of the art ferry that is efficient, safe and fast!
As you know, Honduras held general elections last Sunday November 26th. The election process took place with civility and the process was orderly. There were a total of 9 different presidential candidates, only three had a chance of winning. In the end, the results are tight between two of the candidates.
Let’s face it, finding pristine and remote beaches in Central America is a real challenge. We all dream of traveling to the Caribbean Sea and finding a pristine beach in a remote location. We all think of pristine as unspoiled, beautiful and in its natural state. Yet it loses a lot of its charm as soon as we realize that pristine also means with no comfort and services.
