Tips to make your trip to Honduras easier and more pleasurable
I guess I am a born explorer. Perhaps not your Indiana Jones adventurer going way off the beaten path to follow a quest. But I am one to take a turn on the road and see where it leads. Today while in Roatan, I did just that, and went down a steep road following a sign that said “Ibagari”.
Since I live in La Ceiba, travel to Roatan is easy. I have two options: I can fly or take the ferry. When I first moved to Honduras, I could only fly, as there was still no ferry service available. Fortunately, we now have a state of the art ferry that is efficient, safe and fast!
The question: to stay overnight in San Pedro Sula or travel after dark to La Ceiba? My flight landed a few minutes after 6, so it was 7 by the time I had cleared immigration, customs and had to take a decision. By then, it was already dark!
These post electoral protests have been persistent, and many Hondurans have tired of them. This coming week will be crucial to determine the short term political and social stability in Honduras. The new Congress will take office on the 23rd of January.
Yesterday, Friday, January 12th, a political protest in Tegucigalpa turned violent. When it became obvious to those violent protesters that they would not be able to gain access and attack the old Presidential Palace. That is when they turned on the nearest iconic building nearby. This happens to be the Tegucigalpa Marriott Hotel.
Honduras has a long history of brewing beers. The First of all beer microbreweries in Honduras set up in La Ceiba over 100 years! It all began in the city of La Ceiba, on the North Coast of Honduras. This was in the heyday of Banana Republic of Honduras.
My blog is about travel in Honduras, not about politics in Honduras. However, for the last month, travel to Honduras has been affected by local politics. Due to the uncertainty this creates, many travelers have canceled their plans to visit Honduras. Because of this, I feel compelled to explain what is happening and why.
I must say that the image they portray of Honduras as a dangerous place to live in could not be more removed from our reality. Traveling to Mexico City was fun, but there is nothing like getting back home in the Cangrejal River Valley.
