Most of you probably know that Honduras is one of the largest producers of coffee in the World. As a matter of fact, Honduras is the fifth producer of coffee in the world! Although coffee is produced throughout most of the country, it is the mountainous area in Western Honduras that produces most coffee. This includes the departments of La Paz, Santa Barbara, Intibuca, Lempira, Copan and Ocotepeque. Best of all, Honduras has gained international recognition for its outstanding coffee. So, as you would expect, you can find a variety of coffee shops in Copan Ruinas where you can sample some of the best Honduras coffee.
The four most distinguished coffee shops in Honduras are direct outlets of coffee farms owned by local families. This means that you may meet the owners and family who own the land and produce the coffee! In some cases, you can even take a tour of the farm and buy some of the coffee you have tasted at the coffee shops in Copan Ruinas!
Tour the Top Coffee Shops in Copan Ruinas.
As far as my research goes, there are four outstanding coffee shops in Copan Ruinas worth visiting. Following is my list with the comments about each one of them.
Café Welchez
Perhaps the most obvious of all coffee shops in Copan Ruinas is the Café Welchez. You will find it at the northwest corner of Central Park, adjacent to the Hotel Marina Copan. This cozy and charming coffee shop offers a nice menu of local foods and home-made pastries. If you are interested in something different, try the “ticucos” small tamales with whole beans inside. They go magnificently well with cream! The main coffee estate is halfway down the road between Copan Ruinas and the junction town of La Entrada de Copan. This coffee estate offers great tours of the facility, and you can purchase a tour from Copan Ruinas, as well as on the spot. They also have a branch of their coffee shop on premises.[themify_hr border_width=”1″ width=”1″ color=”light-gray”]
Café San Rafael

An outstanding quality coffee that you can sample at their coffee shop two blocks south of the municipal building in Copan Ruinas. Their modern new building contrasts with the authentic and rustic ambiance at Café Welchez. Hi speed internet, air conditioning and a selection of artisan crafted cheeses provides for a unique tasting experience. Personally, this is my favorite coffee from Copan Ruinas. It is what we serve at our bed and breakfast on the Cangrejal River: La Villa de Soledad. In addition to their coffee and home-made cheeses, you will also sample a magnificent selection of wine.
Without doubt, they offer the most complete wine list in town, probably in all Western Honduras. Although they have more Italian and Chilean wines, they also offer a selection of wines from the USA, France and Spain. This gives you a chance to marry the great cheese with outstanding wine. Talk about a winning combination![themify_hr border_width=”1″ width=”1″ color=”light-gray”]
Coffee Casita

The Coffee Casita is a unique coffee shop in Copan Ruinas. You will find in at the Macaw Mountain bird park just outside of town. As it turns out it is within a small coffee farm, which is part of the production for the famous Café Miramundo. The main coffee estate for this brand is high up in the mountains in the municipality of Santa Rita de Copan. If you are looking for a relaxing outdoor coffee experience, this is the best spot in Honduras! During season you may even see some of the staff picking the coffee beans from the bushes!
A large deck provides an ideal vantage point to enjoy some outstanding bird watching. Sightings include the national bird of Honduras, the Scarlet Macaw and the national bird of Nicaragua, the turquoise browed motmot. Of course, if you have come this far, you need to take at least a couple of hours to walk through this magnificent bird park. Here you will see different varieties of macaws, parrots and toucans that are native to Honduras. You can purchase some of this excellent coffee as well as a variety of souvenirs at the local gift shop.[themify_hr border_width=”1″ width=”1″ color=”light-gray”]
Café Ixchel

The Ixchel coffee estate is up in the mountains just south of Copan Ruinas. The estate offers a Spa experience that includes a replica of a “Temascal” an ancient steam bath that dates to precolombian times. The Cafe Ixchel coffee shop itself is very close to the entrance to town. Find it about half a block south of the corner from the Hotel Paty, across the street from the soccer field in Copan Ruinas. Enjoy your coffee at the lovely outdoor courtyard in the middle of the property. If you love their coffee, you can purchase some of it at this inviting coffee shop in Copan Ruinas.
