About La Ceiba
The original Banco Atlantida Headquarters in La Ceiba

For those interested in a bit of history, you can still visit the first and original bank on the corner of Avenida San Isidro and 1a Calle in La Ceiba. The headquarters have long moved to Tegucigalpa. But the original bank building in La Ceiba is the pride of the company, and it shows! Back when the bank first opened their doors, they could print their own money! As a matter of fact, most of the banana companies minted their own coins or tokens and paid the workers with them. The employees could then use them to buy goods at the company store for goods. Talk about spending the money in house! Just imagine, 100 years ago the government of Honduras allowed private companies to print money! The Banco Atlantida collection has many coins and bills that tell the above story. [themify_hr border_width=”1″ width=”1″ color=”light-gray”]

Banco Atlantida is one of the most solid banks in Honduras. Over the last half century they have expanded their private collection. This includes an extensive numismatic collection. They also have an outstanding art collection. The collection features artwork by the most distinguished Honduran artists.

Last, but not least, they have a magnificent collection of pre-Columbian artifacts. These are all registered with the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History. They include artifacts from different cultures that inhabited Honduras before Columbus landed in Trujillo. As you know he landed there back in 1502 during his fourth and last voyage! I recommend you take the time to visit this magnificent on line collection. It will help you appreciate the efforts that the banana companies put into creating the modern state of Honduras a century ago.
