Carlos Guerra from Café San Rafael wins the Honduras National Barista Contest!

IHCAFE, the Honduran Institute of Coffee celebrated the Honduras National Barista Contest in Tegucigalpa this past weekend. The event is a celebration to the excellent quality of coffee that Honduras produces. This is the eighth consecutive year that this celebration takes place in Honduras. Only the best coffee baristas participate in the contest. This year, Carlos Guerra from Copan Ruinas won the first place.

The Eighth Honduras National Barista Contest

It is interesting to note that this is the first time that Carlos participates in the Honduras National Barista Contest. Yet Carlos Guerra is not a newcomer to gourmet coffee in Honduras. Carlos is the motor behind the Café San Rafael coffee shop in Copan Ruinas. This is a World Class coffee shop that offers gourmet coffee in Copan Ruinas. The coffee they sell there is produced in the family coffee estate in the mountains surrounding the Copan Archaeological Site. It is all high altitude, 100 % Arabica shade grown coffee. Carlos Guerra is a graduate of the Escuela Agricola Panamericana, aka “El Zamorano” He then went on to Switzerland to learn how to produce quality cheeses. The result is the best coffee shop / wine bar and cheese deli in Honduras, and probably Central America. The Café San Rafael is two blocks south of Central Park in Copan Ruinas. If you are a coffee or cheese lover, you must take time to visit and enjoy the produce that is offered here. It is simply, heaven on earth!

You can purchase coffee and or cheese at the San Rafael Shop in Copan Ruinas. They are open daily. For me, it is one of the musts visits while in Copan Ruinas. I think so highly of their coffee, that we only serve coffee from San Rafael at our bed and breakfast: La Villa de Soledad in the Cangrejal River Valley. We are sure that not only will he be an outstanding ambassador of Honduras´ fine coffee and expertise, but also come back with an outstanding recognition for his hard work and Honduras’ fine coffee.
