The coffee shop craze has hit Central America hard, and Tegucigalpa is no stranger to the scene. It was to be expected, Honduras produces fine coffee and we should all enjoy it here at home. Although there are many great coffee shops in Honduras, there is one that really stands out on its own. I am talking about Cafe Galeano in Tegucigalpa. Not only do they feature outstanding coffee from Santa Barbara. They are also one of the most chic coffee shops you will find in the capital of Honduras.
Café Galeano has two different locations in Tegus. The most popular one is in the Distrito Hotelero San Martin. This is the most chic location in town. Several hotels, including the Honduras Maya are in the area. Some of the best restaurants in Tegucigalpa, such as Gino’s are in this area.
Best Breakfast in Town at Cafe Galeano in Tegucigalpa
Cafe Galeano’s locale is a combination of eclectic and chic, with a touch of authentic Honduras. From the outside, the coffee shop seems modern and clean. It has huge windows and a nice terrace on the second floor. But alas, as you walk in the feel is quite the opposite. Authentic wooden columns that come from a local demolition mix with a high tec, vintage looking coffee toaster. Tables are rustic and chairs basic. You are suddenly transported to a unique world called Cafe Galeano.
For those who enjoy a cup of gourmet coffee with a good cigar, the terrace on the second floor is perfect. You get a great view of the park and people coming and going from this vantage point. You will enjoy the terrace best in the late evening, around dusk time. By then you are out of the sun, and temperature has cooled down. This creates the ideal setting to enjoy a cup of coffee and a good Honduran cigar.
Besides coffee, you can also enjoy early breakfasts, pastries and awesome sandwiches at Galeano. They have two locations, one at the Multiplaza Mall in Tegus and other at the Colonla Palmira. This last one is the one that I visited.
A Souvenir T Shirt Shop that Spreads the Wealth!
Galeano is famous not only for its coffee. They have created an outstanding collection of fine t shirts with different motifs of Honduran culture. The Palmira store has a nice t shirt shop on the second floor. These are not your standard tourist t shirt that will lose its form after being washed a couple of times. Furthermore, they have a program where half of what you pay for the T shirt is invested in helping local families in different communities. If you are looking for a souvenir to take home, consider buying one of their t shirts. Not only do they make a great gift, you are helping poor families make ends meet by buying them here.
Project Lempira, manages the funds generated by the t shirt sales. They provide basic grains to poor families in the department of La Paz. This is one of the poorest departments in Honduras. It is up in the mountains of central Honduras, and borders with El Salvador.
If you are looking for a pleasant spot to have a cup of coffee, check out Cafe Galeano in Tegucigalpa. And remember, they are a great venue for a memorable breakfast. Their location, within the San Martin Hotel District is very safe. They also have a good parking area for your car.
