New Honduras Style Highway Rest Stop!

As you drive on along highways around the World, you will find rest stops along the way. These are common along the Interstate highways in the USA, and seldom seen in Honduras. The fact is that many drivers never even recognize the Honduras style highway rest stop areas. Perhaps the most frequented rest stop in Honduras is on the CA5 highway that connects Tegucigalpa with San Pedro Sula. The rest stop is in Siguatepeque, and the amount of drivers that stop there is astronomical. If you are from Honduras, or have lived here for some time, you know what I am talking about. Of course Granja D’Elia es the most used rest stop in Honduras. Heck, it may be the most used rest stop in Central America!

They have a full service restaurant and a fast food buffet that is always open. They have some of the cleanest bathrooms along highways in Honduras. Heck, they even have a hotel, a convenience store and an ATM machine at Granja D’Elia.

For this Christmas Holiday season, I traveled to Copan Ruinas with my family. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across a new Honduras Style Highway rest stop halfway between La Entrada de Copan and Copan Ruinas.  The truth is that this is a road that will tire just about anyone. It is a winding road high in the mountains of Western Honduras. Pot holes are common, and driving requires a lot of attention.  It was great to see a welcoming rest stop during the journey. I could not resist the temptation and stopped by check it out.

Café Welchez Santa Isabel, the Perfect Honduras Style Highway Rest Stop!

Relaxing at Cafe Welchez Santa Isabel

Here is what I found: Café Welchez has just opened a branch of their now famous coffee shops at Santa Isabel. The Café is open 365 days a year from 7 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon. The bathrooms are modern, and best of all, clean.

The coffee shop offers several different ambiances, from an indoor saloon to an outdoor terrace. The terrace has several lounge areas; one is even next to a small fireplace that was cozy and inviting. (The fireplace was not lit up when I was there.)

Enjoying a hot chocolate at Cafe Welchez Santa Isabel

Of course, they offer a nice hot cup of coffee that comes straight from the coffee estate, which is, by the way right there.  Heck, you can even take advantage and take the Copan Coffee Tour that starts there. Service was amicable, the staff was generous with their smiles, and the coffee was great. As I was traveling with the family, my kids ordered a hot chocolate instead of coffee. It was superb! And what can I say about the cakes and pastries? They are do die for!

A Great Tip When Traveling to Copan Ruinas

If my advice is any good, make sure you stop at the new Café Welchez at Santa Isabel during your next trip to Copan Ruinas. It is the perfect Honduras Style highway rest stop. Stretch your legs, have an invigorating cup of coffee and enjoy a nice sweet bite. If you or someone in the group needs a rest room stop, this is the place! You will find the same great service as you would at the San Pedro Sula or Copan Café Welchez coffee shops.

There is plenty of parking for your car here. And of course, you can buy some great coffee to take back home and enjoy with friends and family. I foresee that this new Honduras style highway rest stop will be a big success.
